Whether you are moving across the country or across town, moving is time-consuming and labor-intensive. There are not a lot of people that will tell you they like doing it. But there are some things you can do to make the job easier on yourself and make the transition a little smoother.
Local Movers
Most of the time, local moves are the hardest because people tend to try and do all the work themselves. In some cases, people don't want to spend the money for a mover for a short distance, or they still see moving companies as large companies with tractor trailers and armies of movers that pick up the household items, load them on the truck, and drive them three thousand miles. And while that was true when moving companies first started out, it is just the case anymore.
There are many smaller moving companies that have sprung up that specialize in local moves from one part of town to another. These companies offer the flexibility of hiring two or three movers to do all the heavy lifting for you or getting an entire crew to move everything in the house in a few hours' time.
Doing the Packing
There was a time when you could hire movers that would pack the house for you, but that is harder to find now. The reasons are simple, the liability that goes along with handling other people's things can be very high.
If something gets broken or comes up missing, the moving company could be responsible for it, but if you pack it, it is up to you to make sure it is safe and secure in a box, ready to go on the truck. Check with the moving company about any weight restrictions they have and if you need to provide anything like a dolly or truck for the move so that you are prepared when the movers arrive. This will make things go much faster.
Special Situations
Moving into or out of an apartment complex can be difficult if you are on an upper floor or moving to a top floor apartment. Many complexes do not offer elevators, so that means moving furniture and other heavy items up the stairs. If you know you are moving into or out of an apartment that has a lot of stairs, you need to check with the moving company to see if there is an additional cost involved.
If the movers arrive to find that you have a sectional couch that needs to come off the third floor and there is no elevator to move it in, they may not be prepared with the tools they need. It could delay the job, but if they know in advance, they may bring furniture movers or dollies to help deal with the large couch sections.
